An entire category is built around how lips look. Very little of it is built around what the sun does to them. This file reads the claims, checks them against the evidence, and names the lip balms that made the cut.
Short on time? Skip to the verdicts.
The Claim
Lip products are sold as signals: fuller, glossier, younger-looking. When protection is mentioned at all, it is sold as comfort.
The Evidence
- Lips are skin, and a lip balm with SPF is regulated in the US as a sunscreen drug. (21 CFR 201.327)
- Dermatologists recommend lip protection with SPF 30 or higher. (AAD)
- In one beach survey, about half of people protected their lips, compared with about three in four who protected their skin. Awareness of lip risk was much lower. (Dermatology Times, PubMed)
- Among 408 adults 45+ with actinic cheilitis, a sun-related lip condition, more than 9 in 10 had never used lip sun protection. (Eur J Dermatol)
- Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip has been reported to spread more often than the same cancer elsewhere on the skin. One more reason to get a lip change checked early. (review, PMC)
- The SPF number is measured on skin of the back, not on lips. One study found a lipstick's SPF measured about 2 units lower on the lip. (PubMed)
The verdict on the category: the evidence asks for SPF 30 or higher, reapplied. The marketing asks for shine.
The verdicts
Five lip balms that claim SPF 30 or higher, judged on their own labels. None is upheld outright. Four come with a condition. One is pending review. Anything sold as lip sun protection without “Broad Spectrum SPF 30+” on the label is dismissed.
Some links below are affiliate links through ShopMy and are labelled next to the link; THE RECORD may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Other links go straight to the brand. Where a price hasn't been confirmed, the link shows the price at the retailer. Disclosure.
Upheld = the label and listing hold up to the bar for daily lip protection. It is not a validation of every marketing claim. Conditional = good with a caveat to check. Pending review = the label can't currently be verified, so it isn't recommended. Dismissed = doesn't meet the bar. Every verdict below is based on the brand's published label. How to make any of them work: reapply
- Apply before you go out, and keep a stick where you'll actually see it.
- Reapply after eating or drinking, and at least as often as the label says.
- Outdoors, swimming, or sweating: follow the water-resistance time on the label.
- Wearing color? Put an SPF balm under it or over it, or choose a lip product whose label says broad spectrum SPF 30+.
- A wide-brimmed hat helps. A short-brimmed cap leaves lips exposed.
When to see a dermatologist
This page is information, not medical advice. A sore, scaly, or rough patch on the lip that doesn't heal, a persistent white patch, or any change that worries you belongs in front of a board-certified dermatologist. Products protect; they don't diagnose. Free screenings exist: see the AAD's free skin check finder.
Questions
Do lips need sunscreen?
Yes. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a lip balm or lipstick with SPF 30 or higher, reapplied.
How often should I reapply lip SPF?
Follow the label, which is usually at least every 2 hours, and after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Lip product also wears off when you eat or drink, so reapply after.
Is a tinted lip gloss enough?
Only if its label says broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Color alone isn't sun protection.
